An
outstanding leader in one organization can move into an entirely different
organization and still be an outstanding leader. An outstanding leader posses
qualities that make them stand out. An outstanding leader has qualities such as
having a strong attitude, strong mission, clear vision, good interpersonal
skills and a strong ability to achieve and inspire. These qualities can
transfer from one career to the next because an outstanding leader is always
looking out for the organization and can bring his traits from one career to
the other.
A
great football coach that possesses leadership ability can become CEO of a
company because of their ambition to always be successful. The coach would have
to adjust to a different atmosphere but his traits can be transferred into the
company. They will know how to motivate employees and bring inspiration to the
company and encourage all of their outstanding leadership qualities into their
new career.
I
don’t believe expertise is as important as having outstanding leadership
qualities. Leaders should have basic knowledge but they do not have to be an
expert to bring success to a company. Today being successful in a business
involves possessing outstanding leadership qualities. Being able to be
persistent, have determination, strength, attempt the impossible and never
giving up. An example of a leader I thought of who has changed careers is Joe
Torre. He was a manager for the NY Yankees and brought great success to the
team, and now he is the executive vice president for MLB. His job as manager
and commissioner are both related to MLB but his duties, as a manager and a
commissioner are different. His ability to lead and create success was brought
from his management role into his commissioner position. Being able to adapt to
different atmospheres and work hard to achieve greatness is what makes someone
a outstanding leader

Great example with Joe Torre. He was a great leader for the NY yankees leading them to 4 world series titles. The MLB saw his success as a Manager and knew he would be a great fit. I think expertise can be a factor but definitely not in a situation you described.
ReplyDeleteI think you have a good point about a good leader being able to change industries and maintain good leadership qualities. However, I do believe their is a limit to this practice. For example I would not agree that the leader of a sports team can move into the business world and be as affective a leader. I just think the industry gaps are too wide.
ReplyDeleteI agree that an outstanding leader is one that stands out with their strong interpersonal skills and ability to guide people toward a common goal. However, while leadership qualities are absolutely necessary to be an effective influence in a company, I strongly believe that expertise is crucial too. After all, I would not be too keen to follow a supervisors advise or suggestions if I felt they lacked the knowledge to make such a decision. Leaders not only need to make sure the staff is working together and doing their job, but they need to guide staff when necessary. Lack of expertise would leave that leader in a tough spot. Expertise should not necessarily be the deciding factor if the leader is fit for the initial position however. I believe that expertise can be acquired by studying behaviors, information, and moving technology changes. Anyone can obtain the expertise just as they can possess leadership skills if they are motivated to do so and go through with it.
ReplyDeleteJoe Torre is good example of a leader who can be effective in different roles. persistant and determination key to success. agree.
